the grounds of expense.

came to the conclusion that the best plan would

be for an untrained man to be selected and given

an intensive course lasting about three months,

on the surveying of small crart. He would

then go out without his main training and would

Commander Hole enquired whether the

Joard of Trade would be willing to let the Engineer

Surveyor be trained entirely in Hong Long.

It transpired that they would not at present

be willing to accept this. When, however,

the senior Surveyors in Hong Kong are men who

are qualified as proposed in their letter of

the 10th of June, 1933 ((1) on 13804) they will

be willing for the whole training of Engineer

Surveyors to be carried out locally in Hong

Kong.

As regards the number of additional

Ship and Engineer Surveyors which will be

required, Commander Hole gave the Board of

Trade his views as recorded in my minute of 27.6, and a small Committee has been formed at
